Lanzarote is a photographic performance work by Matthew Bird and Phillip Adams developed on the volcanic Canary Island of Lanzarote. The project explores the surreal landscapes and visionary modernist legacy of César Manrique, whose whitewashed architectures, kinetic sculptures and lava carved interiors transformed the island during the 1960s and 70s.

Through costume, performance and photography, Bird and Adams reimagine Manrique’s utopian world as a queer, comic and cinematic encounter unfolding across craters, lava fields and Atlantic coastlines.

Photographic collaboration with Lanzarote based photographer Alejandro Díaz and supported by the Australian Embassy in Spain through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
